Social-Emotional Learning at School

COOL TO BE ME is a home-grown South African company that develops, publishes and assists in the implementation of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programmes for children aged 6 to 13. Our material forms a critical part of the current Life Skills subject taught in schools.

Within the broad demands of education, international research has shown that Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is a highly effective approach that not only promotes personal development and well- being, but also enhances classroom climate and academic competencies.

What do teachers have to say about COOL TO BE ME?

We have had great fun and had many meaningful conversations during our sessions with the children. I like to think that as a school we are driven by values and not rules, and Cool to be me is just so supportive in this attempt. The material and topics have been age appropriate and the children have related to situations in the stories quite easily. The children have particularly enjoyed discovering and celebrating their strengths and talents, at the same time being aware that you can seldom be good at all things and it’s okay! The programme has proved to be a good way to stimulate and direct the right conversations between child and parent. It helps to instil the values we are so desperate for in our society.
Chatting to my friend recently, I asked how school was going for her Grade 3 daughter. She replied: "At our school we now have this COOL TO BE ME PROGRAMME! This has meant so much for me as a parent and for her. We have chats in the car as to how Mickle or Muckle would have reacted or the choices they would have made in certain situations....and, for me as a parent I can refer back to the book, when I am uncertain about a situation.
The Grades 4 and 6 programmes are going well. The teachers do not need any additional training as your Teacher Guides are very well set out and explain absolutely everything, so we are very happy with it.
We are enjoying the programme so much. The children have responded incredibly well to My Brilliant Brain - so relevant to them at this stage. I definitely look forward to starting the next one. Once again thanks for an awesome programme.
We have begun the programme this term. At this stage we are only managing once a week but are reinforcing during the week. So far we have done Being Truthful and the children have taken their books home. They know the song, have signed the pledge and have made their origami hearts. Tomorrow we will be doing lesson 4 role- playing in groups. We are loving the programme.
I am loving your programme and can't wait to read The kindness keeper to the girls and play the circle game.

“I just wanted to let you know that I've been reading Bouncing Back and the Telling Truth stories to my kids this past week. We've been reading a few chapters each night before going to bed. My son is four and a half and my daughter six and a half and in Grade 1. They have both absolutely LOVED them! We have had very late bedtimes as they've insisted that I keep reading! Even though they are both so young (and I thought too young which is why I hadn't read them the stories until now), they were completely compelled and fascinated! At the end of the each book, they both without any initiation started discussing some of the themes. After the bouncing back story, they both started to talk about some of things they had learnt in the day. From the 'learn the lesson and move on' refrain, my daughter told me that she had learnt that she can tell her friend NO if she doesn't want to do something! What an important thing to learn!” – Nicole, Cape Town
