Promoting your child’s emotional development and social well-being

Cool conversations

A child’s journey to emotional and social wellbeing is facilitated primarily through their daily experiences and the conversations that follow with either, themselves, their peers, their teachers or you, their parents.

Age appropriate and consistent

The COOL TO BE ME curriculum provides a consistent framework of experiences and words that guide children, teachers and parents through these critical conversations from grade 1 to grade 7. As a result children develop the skills needed to manage the complexities, demands and pressures of everyday life. There is space within this framework for each family and school to infuse the conversation with their own values and beliefs. See a full overview of our curriculum.

Family chats and games

All of our workbooks and journals have a section dedicated to family chats and games providing you with the opportunity to engage in your child’s journey to emotional and social wellbeing. Dinner time, bed time or time spent in the car driving to and from extra mural activities are ideal for engaging in COOL TO BE ME fun.

Engage with you children in enchanting stories

The most effective vehicle for teaching children the values, lessons and skills that promote their social, emotional and personal development are stories! COOL TO BE ME has a series of original stories for grade 1,2 and 3 children. If your child is doing BUILDING BLOCKS at school they will receive their own set of storybooks to bring home to read with you. Reading these stories together will greatly assist you in the family chats and games that follow. To see summaries of the stories click here.

If your child is not doing COOL TO BE ME at school you can still enjoy our stories and their benefits at home. Click here to buy a book.

Tips and practical tools

We offer parents plenty of tips and quick practical tools that can be used to assist you in the conversation and manage situations as they arise. The benefits of engaging in the home activities with your child will be felt and enjoyed throughout your parenting journey.

If your child is doing COOL TO BE ME at school watch their homework diary so you don’t miss the opportunity for these cool conversations.

“My daughter spoke of the programme so much and I know it has had a profound effect on her confidence and acceptance of others.” – Springfield parent
“I just wanted to let you know that I've been reading Bouncing Back and the Telling Truth stories to my kids this past week. We've been reading a few chapters each night before going to bed. My son is four and a half and my daughter six and a half and in Grade 1. They have both absolutely LOVED them! We have had very late bedtimes as they've insisted that I keep reading! Even though they are both so young (and I thought too young which is why I hadn't read them the stories until now), they were completely compelled and fascinated! At the end of the each book, they both without any initiation started discussing some of the themes. After the bouncing back story, they both started to talk about some of things they had learnt in the day. From the 'learn the lesson and move on' refrain, my daughter told me that she had learnt that she can tell her friend NO if she doesn't want to do something! What an important thing to learn!” – Nicole, Cape Town
“I would just like to say thank you so much for all you have done for the grade 6 girls through COOL TO BE ME. They are so lucky to have had experienced such profound self-analysis and self-discovery at their age. I think that the work you are doing is so important and the core philosophy of resilient self-esteem is brilliant.” – Springfield parent
“I thoroughly enjoyed the feedback to the COOL TO BE ME sessions at Springfield last night. It is a fabulous course and my daughter enjoyed it tremendously. Also from the response of the parents I think they felt the same way.” – Springfield parent
CTBM helped me so that if someone says you are ugly, don’t listen to him and in your mind say “I am beautiful and I know who I am.” - Grade 6 student
"CTBM is a great programme. It changed my life and helped me feel great about myself." - Grade 6 student
