Teaching – the best part of my job!

COOL TO BE ME Theme pyramid

I love being in the classroom and so this has to be one of the BEST parts of my job…getting to teach our COOL TO BE ME Gr6 programme.

On Wednesday 13 May 2015, I completed the 12 week programme focussing on ‘Identity‘ with the Gr 6 girls at Micklefield School in Rondebosch, Cape Town.

The lessons centred around the important themes of who am I, why I am important, why is everyone else important, how do I create my life and, what are my choices in my generation.

These themes were implemented through experiential learning where children learnt while doing. Through the ‘doing’ the class had the opportunity to experience, reflect, generalise and then apply what they learnt to their everyday lives. We had many valuable discussions, great interaction between classmates and a deeper understand of who they are and their potential was developed.

What the girls had to say:

At the end of the last lesson I gave the girls 2 minutes to quickly jot down what they thought of the programme. Here are a few of my favourite responses:

  • I liked building a positive attitude as it helped me. I also LOVED the skits as it was fun while learning!

  • I like this programme since I never really had a lot of friends and it helped.

  • These few weeks I have found out who I am and now I will always stand up for myself.

  • I’ve learnt to be independent.

  • I liked the game at home – 2 rights and a wrong. It made me realise that I can do anything I put my mind to.

  • I liked when we played the games and talked.

  • It made me feel happy and confident.

  • COOL TO BE ME was really awesome and I finally found out who I am and what I want to be because I am really cool!

  • I didn’t know I had so many friends!

  • I learned about my networks.

The COOL TO BE ME Gr6 programme explores the most crucial development challenge of this age group: identity. Understanding one’s identity and viewing it in a positive light is essential for the healthy development of resilient self-esteem, self-worth and mutual respect.

Thank you Micklefield School for the opportunity of being part of this amazing process.
